Strings

Description

This one is captured in Frankfurt at the so called "Luminale" where illuminated objects and creations are spread all over the city. With some of these installations people can interact, like these strings, installed inside of an old container ship on the river "Main".
Those kids there where fascinated to play with those strings, like everyone else there :) So these strings are the most time in motion. Wasn't so easy to get this picture.

Out of cam, just cropped the format.

The 1st thing that catches my eye is the tall tower-like structure near the center that seems to hold all other strings together. Even though the tower isn't exactly near a point of intersection according to the rule of thirds, differing values between light and dark enables to draw the eye to the structure. The contrast between light and dark is connected even further as the top half consists of illuminated strings set in front of the night sky while the bottom half consists of people who seemingly serve as the dark background against the illuminated strings situated at the front. Thus, the strings are the subjects in this photograph - not the people who are interacting with it. The title even connects with the subject.

I like how the strings seem to be all over the place as though they are the strings of a spider's web. I also like the expressions and gestures of the 2 people at the very front. One person has his or her(?) arms spread out, while the other has a surprised expression. It's clear they are experiencing wonder and awe as they interact with something simple as illuminated strings - which can draw the viewer to sympathize with the people's emotions as they look at the photograph.

However, I feel that this work doesn't seem to tell enough of a story. Granted, the artist may not have intended to tell a story, but instead tell something more informational about the strings installation. Though, I am intrigued to learn that interactive installations like these exist, it would've been interesting for the photographer experiment with the subject (the strings) in various angles, how people interact with it, whether the strings were still or in constant motion, etc. Part of being an artist is experimenting and discovering what could look interesting behind the camera lens or in front of the canvas so that the artist may discover his or her own style.
